Compost for climate - 3 environmental facts that show you how and why KALEA is climate-friendly

If you turn your food scraps into compost at home, you save on waste - that's kind of obvious. But beyond that, you're doing the earth even more good by making your own compost. What the fertility of the soil has to do with it and why organic waste can really stink to high heaven.

For some things, there's no alternative. For example, when it comes to a sustainable electricity provider or the regular use of public transport. For us, there is also no alternative: making our own compost. Whether it's in the backyard or right in your kitchen with KALEA. Today, we're sharing three important facts with you about how you can do even more good for Mama Earth by composting:

1. Less organic waste = Less methane gas

If you're a true KALEA connoisseur, you've probably heard about this issue. Want to know for sure? Thanks to home composting, we avoid methane gas emissions that occur when organic waste is not composted but ends up in landfills. Organic waste continues to rot there, gradually releasing methane gas into the atmosphere. This stinks to high heaven!

Methane gas is a very powerful greenhouse gas - a gas that has about 28 times the effect of carbon dioxide on heating the earth. Globally, organic waste accounts for about 50% of all waste. In a few countries, organic waste is collected and a certain amount of it is used to produce biogas and used for energy. This makes perfect sense. However, even in these countries the organic waste often ends up as residual waste. This is often because there is no optimal disposal option for biowaste, or people do not have space for a compost heap, for example. In addition, controlled biogas production is only the case in a few central European countries.

So if you turn organic waste into compost, you do your part to reduce methane gas being released into the atmosphere. KALEA allows you to turn your organic waste into real compost in a simple and sustainable way. In this way, we are making an important contribution to climate protection. The devices of our first 1,000 crowdfunding supporters alone ensure that emissions of over 200 tons of CO2 are avoided year after year. For us: just the beginning.

2. On the fertile ground of facts

When a leaf falls from a tree in the forest, it lands on the ground. And there, very slowly, it decomposes into the new soil. In this way, nature not only cleans up after itself - it also ensures that the leaf's nutrients remain contained in a natural cycle.

Composting is also important to keep our soils naturally fertile. When organic waste is combined with residual waste its natural impact is foregone, and thus removed from the natural nutrient cycle. This is done, for example, by burning them. Vital elements such as carbon, nitrogen, potassium, phosphorus, and other trace elements are obtained by plants from the soil (and air) in order to grow. If these elements are not returned to the soil, the soil can become depleted of nutrients and in the worst case become infertile (keyword soil degeneration), i.e. so nutrient-poor that nothing grows and thrives here anymore. For varied flora and fauna, this can be a death blow.

If the organic waste is burned, it is lost for remineralization of the soil. Artificial fertilizers are then often used, but due to their lack of structure, they cannot build the soil in the same way as compost, which, in addition to returning nutrients, also strengthens soil diversity and its health.

So when you add your compost back to your garden or potted plants, you're helping to keep vital nutrients and trace elements circulating. So easy and so effective!

Sorry organic waste, no long journey for you

If you make your compost at home, you avoid CO2 because less collection, transport, and processing of waste are required (municipal waste management). All this waste management today requires a lot of energy and very often fossil fuels - which are anything but climate-friendly.

As you can see, by making your own compost, you are doing something good for the environment in many ways. With KALEA, you also have shorter distances, no stinky organic waste, and no more fruit flies in your house. Yay!
